Propyl Alcohol
What is Propyl Alcohol?
Propyl Alcohol, also known as propanol or 1-propanol, is a simple aliphatic alcohol used as a solvent, antimicrobial agent, and viscosity decreasing agent in skincare formulations. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a mild alcoholic odor, derived from the fermentation of corn or synthesized petrochemically. In cosmetics, it aids in dissolving other ingredients, enhances product penetration, and provides preservative-like effects at low concentrations.
Roles in Formulation
This ingredient serves the following purposes in cosmetic formulations:
Solvent
Dissolves and carries other ingredients, helping control viscosity, evaporation rate, and delivery of actives in both water- and oil-based systems.
Antimicrobial agent
Helps limit growth of bacteria and other microbes on skin or in the formula; may be used for product protection, odor control, or targeted antimicrobial effects.
Denaturant
Makes ethanol undrinkable (for regulatory/tax purposes) and can influence dry-down and sensory feel in alcohol-based sprays, toners, and fragrances.
