Paraffinum Liquidum
What is Paraffinum Liquidum?
Paraffinum Liquidum, commonly known as paraffin oil or mineral oil, is a highly refined derivative of petroleum used as an emollient and occlusive agent in skincare products. It forms a protective barrier on the skin's surface to prevent moisture loss, making it particularly effective for dry or irritated skin conditions. Highly purified grades are colorless, odorless, and stable, with low reactivity.
Roles in Formulation
This ingredient serves the following purposes in cosmetic formulations:
Emollient
Softens and smooths skin by filling in surface roughness and improving slip; can also help reduce moisture loss when paired with occlusives and film formers.
Refatting
Replenishes lipids removed during cleansing to improve mildness and reduce tightness, leaving skin or hair feeling less stripped after rinse-off use.
Skin protecting
Forms a barrier to protect skin from external irritants.
Skin conditioning agent
Maintains skin softness, smoothness, and flexibility.
Film former
Creates a continuous film on skin or hair to improve wear, water resistance, transfer resistance, shine, or hold in sunscreens, makeup, and styling products.
