Glycoprotein
What is Glycoprotein?
Glycoproteins are complex biomolecules consisting of a protein backbone covalently linked to carbohydrate chains, naturally occurring in human skin and derived from sources like human placenta, milk, or microbial fermentation for skincare use. In cosmetics, they function as skin conditioning agents, promoting hydration, cell signaling, and repair processes by mimicking the skin's extracellular matrix components. They are valued for their biocompatibility and ability to enhance skin barrier function without synthetic additives.
Roles in Formulation
This ingredient serves the following purposes in cosmetic formulations:
Emollient
Softens and smooths skin by filling in surface roughness and improving slip; can also help reduce moisture loss when paired with occlusives and film formers.
Moisturising
Improves skin hydration and comfort by combining water-binding (humectant) and barrier-supporting (emollient/occlusive) mechanisms to reduce dryness.
Skin protecting
Forms a barrier to protect skin from external irritants.
Skin conditioning agent
Maintains skin softness, smoothness, and flexibility.
Soothing
Helps reduce the feeling of discomfort and visible irritation by supporting skin calmness, often through anti-irritant, barrier-supporting, or cooling mechanisms.
