Cymbopogon Citratus
What is Cymbopogon Citratus?
Cymbopogon Citratus is the INCI name for the essential oil extracted from the leaves of the lemongrass plant (Cymbopogon citratus), a tropical grass native to India and Sri Lanka commonly used in skincare for its aromatic and therapeutic properties. Rich in citral, geraniol, and other volatile compounds, it provides a fresh, citrusy scent and exhibits antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. In cosmetics, it is typically used in low concentrations in cleansers, toners, and serums to purify skin, reduce oiliness, and soothe irritation.
Roles in Formulation
This ingredient serves the following purposes in cosmetic formulations:
Fragrance ingredient
Contributes scent character and/or masks base odors, shaping the overall sensory experience of the formula (subject to allergen and IFRA considerations).
Antifungal agent
Inhibits fungal growth on skin/scalp or within the product, supporting stability and helping manage fungal-related concerns depending on the application.
Tonic
Supports a light, toning after-feel—often combining mild astringency, refreshing solvents, and humectants—to prep skin and refine sensory finish.
Deodorant agent
Targets malodor by neutralizing odor molecules, inhibiting odor-causing microbes, or adding fragrance notes to improve underarm and body freshness.
Antimicrobial agent
Helps limit growth of bacteria and other microbes on skin or in the formula; may be used for product protection, odor control, or targeted antimicrobial effects.
